What Size Sump Pump do I Need?
The formula to determine your needed sump pump size is simple. Measure the vertical height from your sump pump to the discharge outlet in meters. For every 10 meters horizontally of discharge pipe, add 2.5 meters.
That will give you your 'static head'. Make sure your pump can cope with this static head. Find this in the 'Technical Specification' tab on your pump page and don't go above this. For example, the Ebara Best One MA and MS submersible water pumps have a maximum head of 9m.
How Can You Select The Correct Sump Pump?
1. Choose an Appropriate Type of Sump Pump
A submersible pump lies within the pit: quiet and efficient, best for frequent or heavy water accumulation – expensive but more effective. A pedestal pump has its motor located above the water surface: accessible and inexpensive, but noisy and best for light water load.
2. Determine the Size Based on Power and Capacity
Ratings: 1/3 HP, 1/2 HP, 3/4 HP. Majority of ordinary UK homes handle 1/3 HP capacity (~1,500–3,000 GPH) When you often experience basement flooding or high discharge lift
3. Look For Important Characteristics
Float switches: pressure or vertical/tethered floats (for automation). Do not choose a pump with entangled floats. Backups: battery or water-powered backups, and alarms (some with Wi-Fi alarm)
4. Reliable Design and Warranty
Choose reliable materials such as stainless steel, cast iron or even thermoplastics. Such materials are durable and resistant to corrosion. Make sure that your chosen product has at least three-year warranty, although there are products with five-year warranty.
